Hej everyone

Happy new year to you!

I mentioned a coming Christmas present for you, but like everything here one was delayed and one is still out there.

Press Review
We added a page showing the media attention you and us were able to raise.
Is your article missing? Write me an email and we will add it as well (agnes.meyder[ät]2010wses.org).

Results
Slowly every text document is not only online but also sorted. Check out Results for all university projects as well as energy charts of the participating countries.

WSEN mailing list
In December/ January our team launched the wsen- mailing list!
This is a nice way to stay in touch and share whatever you have in mind in regards of sustainability.
We would be glad to welcome you there, just write a mail to wsen-join@listserv.uni-tuebingen.de.
(The list is open to everyone.)

Video
Well, this is the even-now delayed Christmas present: the videos are at the publisher`s place since some weeks.
I didn’t hear of any problems but apparently, they are not online yet.
The overall quality is very good by the way and our University will publish them in high quality.
We may publish the audio alone as well, if there is interest in it (audio can already be requested).

So let’s have some more patience here.

WSES 2011 at BTH, Sweden
Some alumni may have realized: the main WSES 2010 team was for a visit at BTH, Sweden in the middle of december.
It was a very successful weekend for both the Summit and the Network and we are glad to be able to work together!
Never heard of WSES 2011? Head over to their homepage.
Your university is not on the list? Contact Adnan via their page and change it!

Attention: The application deadline is in the middle of January!

See you around!
Agnes

Hej everyone

it is now 2 months since we all met in Tübingen for the World Student Environmental Summit!
We hope that since then your time at university was not too busy and that you also had some time to reflect the summit and its outcomes.

As we discussed during the summit, we want you to address your university president with an individual university proposal written by you as members of the respective universities. All of you got the template for it which was created by the writer team in a previous email.
On our facebook page there is already a discussion about the university proposals and some reports from delegates who already had a meeting with their presidents. So we kindly ask those of you who have not yet written their university proposal to do so until the end of November and to hand it over to their presidents.
Additionally, we ask all of you to submit the university proposals to us (assignment[ät]2010wses.org) as soon as you finished them! We want to archive all of them, because his will be a good collection of all your ideas for the following years. If your proposal is not written in English, please additionally send us a short summary in English (bullet points).

We wish you success in convincing your president to move on forward to a more sustainable university and hope to hear from you soon!

And we work on a Christmas present for you .

Best,
the 2010 WSES Organising Team

—————————-
Update: ETH Zürich (CH), TU München (DE), Charles University (CZ), Tokyo University (JP), Kiel University (DE) have already sent their very interesting proposals.
Apparently the emphasis is mostly ESD: Education for Sustainable Development.

Hej everyone

Some small announcements:

WSES 2010 Summit Evaluation Form
Our evaluation form is online.
It is accessible for everyone via a login into our page: Evaluation Form
The form has 8 topics concerning everything from information management, food, accommodation, … to our homepage and we would be glad to hear your suggestions to adjust the Summits accordingly in the next years.

WSES 2011
The WSES 2011 has opened its web presence: http://2011wses.org.
Their Facebook Fan Page was also created: WSES 2011 Facebook Fan Page.
They have issued a request for universities, that may want to take part in the WSES 2011, so feel free and mail Adnan via delegate[ät]2011wses.org with your contact info.

Please note: only universities, which send two students (bachelor, master, phd) and hopefully single participants (bachelor, master, phd) can take part in the summit – but no organisations!
If you need travel funding, please ask them for further information and try to fundraise on your own as well.

Hopefully some of the WSES 2010 helpers & delegates will be at the WSES 2011 as well.

I wish you a nice not-that-foggy November!
And yeah, we are working on the videos .. and the rest!

Hej everyone

The World Student Environmental Summit 2010 Facebook Fan Page as well as our Twitter account are two fascinating ways to communicate with our small but nonetheless wonderful community.

We do not have any statistics running in the background of our own homepage, but Facebook has.
So in the middle of working through the videos, I took a break to show you some nice charts about the location of our Facebook fans, the amount of “Likes” we received as well as some other data.

Here you can see all the countries, where our fans are located as well as the amount of total interactions and page views (which are very important).

Our fans can be sorted after gender and age:

But these are just our Facebook fans. We have 27 Twitter followers as well, spread over the globe from Australia, Canada, China, Indonesia, Israel, Japan, Sweden (location for the WSES in 2011), Switzerland, the Philippines and other countries.
Thanks to them as well!

And if you missed our results: Please visit the Results page for photos, posters and a list of university projects!

Hey everyone!

The summit is past for 12 days (+ 5 days) now but this does not mean that we relaxed since then!
Some delegates stayed for another week in Tübingen and were busy to write the template for the university proposal, the outcomes report and the proposal for political decision makers together with WSEN members and some members of the 2010 WSES organising team.

You already received the first part of it – the university proposal – which we hope you will edit and deliver to your university president soon. We heard that some delegates already had an appointment with their president, which is really awesome!!!

The second and third part – the outcomes report and the proposal for political decision makers – was handed over this Monday to Norbert Gorißen, Head of Division Strategic Aspects of International Cooperation in the German Federal Ministry for the Environment and this Tuesday also to Winfried Hermann, member of parliament for the German Green Party “Bündnis 90/ Die Grünen” and chairman of the Committee on Transport, Building and Urban Affairs.

The outcomes report is a summary of the 2010 WSES and includes the most important speaker input, all discussion outcomes, additional ideas, a conclusion and more.
You can check and download the full report here: 2010wses.org: Outcomes Report WSES 2010 or issuu.com/2010wses: Outcomes Report WSES 2010.

The political proposal focuses on three main aspects of the summit namely sustainable economy including the stake-holder approach, the question of economic growth and innovation incentives. The second main aspect is Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) and eco-friendly behaviour. In the following paragraph, the proposal focuses on knowledge and technology transfer as well as renewable energy.
The proposal is available here: Political Proposal

Please feel free to print the proposal and hand it over to decision makers in your country!

We would be very interested in knowing to whom you will pass it on – so just write us a short message with this information if you get active. We can then create something like an “influence list” of the 2010 WSES.

Thanks for all your great work, guys!

I wish you all the best,
Carina

Hola everyone!

One week passed by after the end of the summit and we are busy preparing the material for you, that you created.

But first some links to the press:

Media coverage
Our summit was covered by the SWR in radio and television. Only the radio link is available from now on and please understand, that it’s apparently in German.

The talk by Gabriel Chan was also covered by our university on the page of the Institute for Politics

We released our third press announcement to announce the meeting with the Federal Ministry of Environment and Energy on October 4 as well.

200 Facebook Fans
In the week after the Summit, our Facebook Fanpage experienced quite some visitors which resulted in 202 fans at the moment.
We are very thankful and we hope that you all will stay in contact.

To help you with your work, we have some links to offer to you:

Posters and Assignments
They are already available in two places and will be published on our homepage in a few days as well.
Our issuu.com – account is one possibility to view and download them.
You may notice, that we are not finished sorting them there but due to your university’s proposals we decided to give you access to them as early as possible.

Pictures
The official pictures are available in our gallery and are downloadable there as well. We will open up that space for uploading as well in a few days.

If you use our pictures, please include the name of the photographer in our article. Our photographers are named Ronja Ratzbor and Kerstin Schiele. We would appreciate it, if you would let us know, where you published them as well, so we can link to this page.

University proposals
On Sunday, we were able to mail out the draft for you to use to suggest new ideas to your university.
The second mail contained the full Name+EMail-address list.
If you haven’t received this draft or the list, please request them again via participate[ät]2010wses.org .

Now, everyone should wonder: where is the Proposal that our hard working writer team presented to the Ministry of Energy and Environment on Monday?

Well, this proposal deserves its own post!

This blog post will be online in the next few days so “see” you in the next days here!

Hej everyone

After some talks with the delegates at the party and discussing it by ourselves since some days, this post will be an announcement of all the things, which will be uploaded soon.

Pictures
We will upload our pictures on a server like Dropbox and inform you about its URL. In this place, there will be space for you to upload your pictures as well. If you have an external online picture book, please link to it in the comments below or in the forum so that others can check out these photos as well.

Our photos are made by pretty well qualified photographers, who agreed to distribute their pictures without restrictions as long as you include them as the photographer. So if you need photos for your university news paper etc, it is worth checking through them.

This photos will be available in one week (when I received their DVD).

Videos
We are in the middle of converting them. Since I need more than a week to cut and check them, I will give further information about their publishing and downloading link in approximately 2,5 weeks.

Slides
We asked all speakers to send us their slides, but we weren’t able to receive that many agreements.
Many of our videos include somehow the slides depending on who was filming them, so it’s worth checking every video by itself.

EMail-Addresses
The signature list was a full success, everyone signed to make their email address available for everyone.
So I will convert our software, which filters the email addresses respective to the Participant’s country to show all addresses.
This may take some days as well.

Posters and first Assignments
We will upload all posters and university projects as well as all energy sheets and everything from the assignments, that seems to be interesting in the next days.
I have already access to all of these documents, so this will be uploaded in the next days as well.

Writer Session
Once the people from the writer session were able to finish the official proposal, this will be published on our website as well.

So I assume that in 7 days there will be the first blog entry with links to the summit’s content.

What are we doing right now besides organizing the closing ceremony and running some group works?

We are currently converting the videos of the lecture to something viewable, the food team is serving a soup in 10 min and if you are a delegate, please note all of our food is organic!

We are very proud to be able to reduce our carbon footprint in such a way with the help of our sponsors Der Marktladen, Bionade, Delinat, Gehr and Doshisha university, BTH and PE (see Sponsors for a full list).

Hej everyone,

This is THE last, no the LAST blog post before the summit starts.

I just visited the location in the last days, finished all preparations (ok not really “finish” but nonetheless) … and the weather forecast show no signs of rain.
Combining the weather forecast with huge windows in “my” room and a kitchen around the corner, I am looking forward to Monday!

I think it is probably about time to say a big “Thanks!” to Mr Grünwaldt.
Thanks for supporting us to experience not only the summit but also the whole planing phase.
Thanks for being able to get in touch with these many different and fascinating people.
Thanks for having the chance to try and work on such a huge project and see it grow until it hatches.
Thanks University of Tübingen, Doshisha and thanks to all of our sponsors for your support and your trust.
Thanks for this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for all of us and hej, we made it!

These are our speakers and equally awesome are our delegates, coming from all over the world to meet here in Tübingen.

Well the big “Thank-you” post after the summit will be much longer so I better stop here.

To make sure, that everyone has the latest information, here they are:

List of Speakers
Like promised, we were able to finish the official list of speakers for publication. You can find it in the menu “The Summit” as “Speakers” .

Emergency phone number
0049 -176-21628249 (via non-German phone)
0176-21628249 (via German phone)

– When to use: If you miss the train connection, you mailed to us.
We need to reschedule the pickup time for the car from Reutlingen Hbf.

– When not to use: If your flight to Stuttgart airport is delayed.
We have your flight number (if you mailed it to us), so we know about the delayed planes.
We do not check flights to other airports (see above “when to use”).

Rule of thumb if you missed your connection: take the next connection first, then ask a kind traveller to lend you his mobile phone to phone us.
So first the connection, then the information. And yes, there are well-known “holes” in the net-coverage when you take the train.

Hotel Address
If everything fails and you can’t even contact us in Reutlingen via a public phone, take a taxi to:
Sonnenmatte 51, 72820 Sonnenbühl (Feriendorf Sonnenmatte)

This is expensive! and we know, that you are somewhere on the road so please try to phone us somehow instead of taking a taxi.

Staff Position
Stuttgart airport: in front of the checkout area.
From 8-12, you’ll meet Carina, in the afternoon (12 – 16:00) Asami will pick you up and in the early evening (16-20:00) Sebastian will take care of you and send you to the shuttle bus X3 to Reutlingen main station.
Note: Carina is German, Asami is Japanese and Sebastian is Mexican .

Reutlingen main station: please wait in the main station hall.
Our drivers will commute between the Sonnematte and Reutlingen based on your arrival time and know who they should pick up.
So if they aren’t waiting for you in the main station hall, they will arrive shortly after you and won’t leave Reutlingen without you.
Note: Our drivers are students and will help through the whole summit in different areas.

Arrival/Departure Time
There are some people who didn’t give us any information at all.
Without your arrival time, we can not pick you up in Reutlingen to transfer you to the Sonnenmatte!

Flight Assignment
Yes, we have one last assignment for you. Ask your neighbor about his knowledge about environmental issues!
Try to bring some intel, so that we can map it together to a fresh picture of the world.
And maybe your questions will change something in the world.

I wish you a safe trip and we’ll meet on Monday.

Greets
Agnes

Hej everyone

We made some announcements and a major change, so let me rush through it.
.. And we have a surprise with someone from Harvard in store for you.

Change of Personnel
Sadly Sinikka had to leave us to travel to Canada, so the heavy responsibility to answer all your emails was shifted to our Japanese helper Asami (and me in complex situations).

Arrival and Departure Place Changed
A fierce glance at the GoogleMap on our page showed, that the city Reutlingen is much better as arrival and departure place than Tübingen.
So we announced some days back, that the pick-up place was changed to Reutlingen main station.

If you land in Stuttgart Airport, we will direct you to the shuttle bus X3 to Reutlingen and you’ll get off the bus in Reutlingen main station (Reutlingen Hbf) by yourself. There, one of our cars is waiting to pick you up and transport you to the Sonnenmatte (12 km = 30 min).
Everyone else will arrive in Reutlingen via train and we will pick you up at the main station / on the specific platform.
(Instructions can be found on our Travel Information page too.)

You need to catch one of our cars to the Sonnenmatte, a Taxi is very expensive!

So please send your arrival and departure time to participate[ät]2010wses.org as fast as possible.

Accommodation & Contact Data
We all (except our speakers) will stay in small bungalows with a kitchen, bathroom and 3 rooms of which one is a double room (a room with two separate beds).
We give you the choice of selecting your room size: single or double. You can mail this data to us via participate[ät]2010wses.org also or input it in our database via the following link: your user data.
On this page you can not only check your gender and the room size but also correct your university’s contact data (in Latin and other alphabet) and enter an email address to stay in contact with the WSENetwork. You can also choose your preferred group again.

The correct university contact data is important for next year, when the new invitation letters will be send out.

Fund and Free Time (and some Money)
In the first evening, we would be glad, if you could present your country a little bit. We are not talking about numbers, boring statistics or whatever but dances, songs, fairy tales … and some jokes can’t be bad either.
Also you should bring a little personal thing, you don’t mind to loose for a little surprise action.

The Fun-and-Free-Time people asked me to emphasize the following as well:
We will have the closing party in a club in Tübingen. For this, you’ll need some money if you want to buy drinks. Additionally you may want to eat something special in your free time in Tübingen on Thursday or at the airport, so don’t forget to bring some Euro with you. Drinks start with 3 Euro I think.

Oh well and we have these posters:

Posters
After a long period of meditating, our staff was able to select some of the university projects to be presented in the evening of the 21th. All the others are encouraged to send a poster about their project, so that we can show your project to the others.
These, who will send a poster, can receive a letter which is valid for official funding by university or your country in most of the countries.
We are sorry, that we announce it that late but hopefully some of you can close the flight funding with this.

Harvard? .. Harvard!
Ehm no, Harvard was not rebuild in Tübingen.
We are glad to announce, that Gabriel Chan from the Harvard Environmental Economics Program will be in Tübingen September 23 (Thursday) and will give a speech with the topic “Energy Economics and Innovation”. He will probably join us for dinner as well.
The talk is voluntary but please check it out. (And if you are completely beaten: we will tape the talk and will publish his slides afterwards.)
This talk does not collide with the biochar talk!

The current mood of the Organisation Committee can be described with van Halen`s “Running with the Devil”: “least i don’t need to beg or borrow yes i’m livin’ at a pace that kills”.

I think, we’ll survive …
…. and the summit “can be everything we dreamed”. At least “I can see it coming, can you feel it in the air?” because “everything’s a changing, nothin’s going to be the same” …
( “Best of both Worlds” by van Halen, “In the Air” by TV Rock Feat. Rudy, “Changing Time” by Chris Rea).

In the next days, we will be able to publish a list of our speakers and their speech`s topics. So stay tuned!

See you in 11 days!
Agnes
